The article deals with the multiphysics simulation of electrokinetic flows. When charged particles are immersed in a fluid and are additionally subjected to electric fields, this results in a complex coupling of several physical phenomena. In a direct numerical simulation, the dynamics of moving and geometrically resolved particles, the hydrodynamics of the fluid, and the electric field must be suitably resolved and their coupling must be realized algorithmically. Here the two-relaxation-time variant of the lattice Boltzmann method is employed together with a momentum-exchange coupling to the particulate phase. For the electric field that varies in time according to the particle trajectories, a quasistatic continuum model and its discretization with finite volumes is chosen. This field is coupled to the particulate phase in the form of an acceleration due to electrostatic forces and conversely via the respective charges as boundary conditions for the electric potential equation. This paper reinterprets Amdahl's law in terms of execution time and applies this simple model to supercomputing. The systematic discussion results in practical formulas enabling to calculate expected running time using large number of processors from experimental runs using low number of processors, delivers a quantitative measure of computational efficiency of supercomputing applications. Through separating non-parallelizable contribution to fractions according to their origin, Amdahl's law enables to derive a timeline for supercomputers (quite similar to Moore's law) and describes why Amdahl's law limits the size of supercomputers. The paper validates that Amdahl's 50-years old model (with slight extension) correctly describes the performance limitations of the present supercomputers. Using some simple and reasonable assumptions, the absolute performance bound of supercomputers is concluded, furthermore that serious enhancements are still necessary to achieve the exaFLOPS dream

Finding new drugs that can more effectively kill cancer cells or disrupt the growth of tumors is one way to improve survival rates for ailing patients. Researchers are using supercomputers to find new chemotherapy drugs and to test known compounds to determine if they can fight different types of cancer. Recent efforts have yielded promising drug candidates, potential plant-derived compounds and insights into how to design more effective drugs.

Next-generation supercomputers will feature more hierarchical and heterogeneous memory systems with different memory technologies working side-by-side. A critical question is whether at large scale existing HPC applications and emerging data-analytics workloads will have performance improvement or degradation on these systems. We propose a systematic and fair methodology to identify the trend of application performance on emerging hybrid-memory systems. We model the memory system of next-generation supercomputers as a combination of "fast" and "slow" memories. We then analyze performance and dynamic execution characteristics of a variety of workloads, from traditional scientific applications to emerging data analytics to compare traditional and hybrid-memory systems. Our results show that data analytics applications can clearly benefit from the new system design, especially at large scale. Two biophysicists from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have used supercomputers to show how cell membranes control the shape, and consequently the function, of a major cancer-causing protein. The protein, a small enzyme called K-Ras, is attached to cell membranes where it senses signals that originate outside the cell. During cancer, dysfunctional K-Ras then activates proteins inside the cell that can cause tumor growth and metastasis. K-Ras functions as a troublesome molecular switch, which is perpetually "on" in many cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer. The study not only offers a novel method to study K-Ras, which is only 1/100,000th of an inch across, but also shows how the protein's geometry could explain its role in cancer progression.

The single program multiple data (SPMD) partitioned global address space (PGAS) model presented in this paper uses a procedural programming language appealing to undergraduate students. We propose that the amusing nature of the approach may engender creativity and interest using these concepts later in more sober environments. Specifically, we implement parallel extensions to LOLCODE within a source-to-source compiler sufficient for the development of parallel and distributed algorithms normally implemented using conventional high-performance computing languages and APIs.
