10:30 Arxiv.org CS Privacy Impact Assessment: Comparing methodologies with a focus on practicality. (arXiv:2110.07366v1 [cs.CR])

Privacy and data protection have become more and more important in recent years since an increasing number of enterprises and startups are harvesting personal data as a part of their business model. One central requirement of the GDPR is the implementation of a data protection impact assessment for privacy critical systems. However, the law does not dictate or recommend the use of any particular framework. In this paper we compare different data protection impact assessment frameworks. We have developed a comparison and evaluation methodology and applied this to three popular impact assessment frameworks. The result of this comparison shows the weaknesses and strengths, but also clearly indicates that none of the tested frameworks fulfill all desired properties. Thus, the development of a new or improved data protection impact assessment framework is an important open issue for future work, especially for sector specific applications.

Practitioners from diverse occupations and backgrounds are increasingly using machine learning (ML) methods. Nonetheless, studies on ML Practitioners typically draw populations from Big Tech and academia, as researchers have easier access to these communities. Through this selection bias, past research often excludes the broader, lesser-resourced ML community -- for example, practitioners working at startups, at non-tech companies, and in the public sector. These practitioners share many of the same ML development difficulties and ethical conundrums as their Big Tech counterparts; however, their experiences are subject to additional under-studied challenges stemming from deploying ML with limited resources, increased existential risk, and absent access to in-house research teams. We contribute a qualitative analysis of 17 interviews with stakeholders from organizations which are less represented in prior studies. We uncover a number of tensions which are introduced or exacerbated by

05:44 Arxiv.org CS Online Application Guidance for Heterogeneous Memory Systems. (arXiv:2110.02150v1 [cs.PF])

Many high end and next generation computing systems to incorporated alternative memory technologies to meet performance goals. Since these technologies present distinct advantages and tradeoffs compared to conventional DDR* SDRAM, such as higher bandwidth with lower capacity or vice versa, they are typically packaged alongside conventional SDRAM in a heterogeneous memory architecture. To utilize the different types of memory efficiently, new data management strategies are needed to match application usage to the best available memory technology. However, current proposals for managing heterogeneous memories are limited because they either: 1) do not consider high-level application behavior when assigning data to different types of memory, or 2) require separate program execution (with a representative input) to collect information about how the application uses memory resources. This work presents a toolset for addressing the limitations of existing approaches for managing complex
