The dress rehearsal for the giant Space Launch System had been scheduled for Friday at launch pad 39B at Cape Canaveral, Florida, at the same time as SpaceX's lift-off from pad 39A. The test of the rocket, which is to return humans to the Moon, is now expected to resume shortly after the take-off of the SpaceX flight, which is to carry three businessmen and a former astronaut to the International Space Station. The 322-foot (98 meters) SLS rocket will remain on its launch pad while waiting. In this final test before blast-off for the Moon later this year, all the steps leading up to launch must be rehearsed, from filling the tanks to the final countdown, which will be stopped just before the engines fire. The run-through started last Friday and was originally scheduled to end late Sunday, but NASA teams encountered "a whole myriad of technical challenges" as well as uncooperative weather on Saturday, said Mike Sarafin, the mission manager for the Artemis Moon landing. Among the

NASA's GEDI mission has reached a major milestone with the release of its newest data product, which provides the first near-global estimate of aboveground forest biomass and the carbon it stores—filling a key gap in climate research.

NASA's dress rehearsal for its mega moon rocket is off until at least this weekend because of a pair of technical problems that kept stalling a fueling test.

The second attempt at the final, crucial prelaunch test for NASA's Artemis I mission to the moon was scrubbed on Monday.

NASA's airborne Lunar Spectral Irradiance, or air-LUSI, flew aboard NASA's ER-2 aircraft from March 12 to 16 to accurately measure the amount of light reflected off the Moon. Reflected moonlight is a steady source of light that researchers are taking advantage of to improve the accuracy and consistency of measurements among Earth-observing satellites.

The Hubble Space Telescope has directly photographed evidence of a Jupiter-like protoplanet forming through what researchers describe as an 'intense and violent process'. This discovery supports a long-debated theory for how planets like Jupiter form, called 'disk instability'.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) used Hubble to spot the most distant star ever, a whopping 12.8 billion light years away. Hubble itself can't see that far, but it got an assist from a massive gravitational lens known as the Sunrise Arc. The post Hubble Spots Most Distant Star Ever appeared first on ExtremeTech.

Known as the "wet dress rehearsal," it is the final major test before the Artemis-1 mission this summer: an uncrewed lunar flight that will eventually be followed by boots on the ground, likely no sooner than 2026. "It is our last design verification prior to our launch," senior NASA official Tom Whitmeyer said in a call with reporters this week. Data collected from the test will be used to finalize a date for Artemis-1 -- NASA had said May could be the first window, but later now seems likely. It is called a "wet" dress rehearsal because super-cooled liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen will be loaded into SLS from ground systems, just as they would be in a real launch. The 322 feet (98 meters) tall rocket -- expected to be the most powerful in history at the time it is operational -- was rolled out to Launch Complex 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida around two weeks ago. The test begins at 5:00 pm Eastern Time (2100 GMT) with a "call to stations," as members of the launch

NASA on Friday begins a critical two-day-long test of its giant Space Launch System (SLS) rocket complete with a mock countdown, as the agency gears up to return humans to the Moon.

Even in our cosmic backyard, the solar system, many questions remain open. On Venus there are formations similar to volcanoes, but it is not known if they are active. The surface of Mars suggests that there was once a vast ocean, but how it disappeared remains unclear. On the other hand, recent detections of chemical compounds that may indicate the presence of biological activity on Mars and Venus, so-called biosignatures, keep the search for life outside Earth alive. The answers may lie in the analysis of the light that reaches us from these planets, through the "fingerprints" that the molecules leave in the spectrum of that light.

Its light twinkled some 900 million years after the Big Bang, astronomers say.

The newly discovered star, called "Earendel," is so far away its light has taken 12.9 billion years to reach Earth, when the universe was seven percent its current age. "We almost didn't believe it at first, it was so much farther than the previous most distant," said astronomer Brian Welch of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, lead author of a paper in Nature describing the discovery. The previous record holder was detected in 2018 when the universe was four billion years old. Because the universe is expanding, by the time light from distant stars reaches us it is stretched to longer, redder wavelengths, a phenomenon called "redshift." Earendel's light came from an era called redshift 6.2. "Normally at these distances, entire galaxies look like small smudges, the light from millions of stars blending together," said Welch in a statement. The galaxy hosting the star has been naturally magnified and distorted by an effect called gravitational lensing. This is when a massive object

The Hubble Space Telescope has established an extraordinary new benchmark: detecting the light of a star that existed within the first billion years after the universe's birth in the big bang - the farthest individual star ever seen to date.

With a fortuitous lineup of a massive cluster of galaxies, astronomers discovered a single star across most of the entire observable Universe. This is the farthest detection of a single star ever. The star may be up to 500 times more massive than the Sun. The discovery has been published today in the journal Nature.

The iconic space telescope may be worn from wear and tear after 30 years, but it remains the most dominant tool in its field.
