The advertisement—posted on Mirror, a Web3 publishing platform, in March last year—outlined an eye-catching if perhaps confusing proposal: “Access NFTs for a follistatin plasmid phase I clinical trial in Prospera ZEDE, Honduras.” The ad had been posted by a biotech startup called Minicircle, which was recruiting participants for a clinical trial of gene therapy. But…

Harmful fungi cause enormous agricultural losses. Conventional techniques for combating them involve the use of poisonous fungicides. Researchers at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), working with partners from Germany, France, and Switzerland on the DialogProTec project, have developed environmentally safe alternatives that trick the pathogens' chemical communication with plants. Now that the research has been completed, the new technology is ready for use.

Insofar as variants for mitochondrial disease are supposed to be rare in the genome, don't think for even a minute that it can't happen to you. In fact, the closer one looks at the full mitonuclear genomes of normal folks, the more one realizes that no one is actually normal—we are all, shall we say, temporarily asymptomatic.

Technology has become increasingly intrusive. Just a few decades ago, the idea of being near-constantly tethered to a device may have been unpalatable, particularly when that device sends your every activity to corporations and means you are contactable 24 hours a day. In 2018, though, we can hardly imagine living without one. Willingly integrating technology into your body, or biohacking, therefore seems like the next logical step. We have welcomed smartphone devices into our lives – often paying substantial amounts for the privilege – because they are unbelievably useful. Many expect the next logical progression in personal technology to be… This story continues at The Next Web

Tea was cultivated in China nearly 5,000 years ago.Its molecular makeup makes it the perfect biohack for regulating mood, alertness, and concentration throughout the day.Tea may not be a panacea, but studies suggest promising long-term health benefits.NoneChinese sage-king Shennong discovered tea when the leaves of a Camellia sinensis shrub drifted into his cauldron of boiling water. An agriculturalist and medicinal pioneer, Shennong decided to test the fortuitous brew and relished its uplifting properties. In other botanical tests, Shennong would be poisoned more than 70 times. Each time, he cured himself with tea. That's one version of the story anyway. While Shennong is a mythical figure, tea does originate from China, where it was cultivated nearly 5,000 years ago as a vegetable. Over time it made the shift from food staple to a beverage that closely resembles what we call matcha. Today, only water is a more widely consumed beverage. Another debunked aspect of the

In a bizarre experiment, a curious mind created unnamed DNA patterns which, if translated, will tell you something about the creation of the universe and the might of Allah. The endeavour left some scratching their heads over its aim, and the biohacker himself conceded that it might not entail far-reaching changes for society.

To err is human, to inject oneself with DIY DNA is divine… apparently? At least, that may have been the thinking behind one of 2018’s most sensational science experiments. Teenager Adrien Locatelli from the French city of Grenoble translated the names of Jewish characters from the book of Genesis in the Bible and the entire 13th chapter of the Koran, the Surah Ar-Ra'd, into DNA code, all the while asking himself: “Is it even possible to do this?” Locatelli switched every Hebrew character in the Book of Genesis with DNA code, made up of the letters “ACGT.” He did, however, exclude the certain passages he considered “controversial.” Using an online tool, the teenage biohacker was able to translate the nucleotide (building blocks of DNA and RNA) information into protein sequences which he then injected into each of his thighs.

Adrien Locatelli, from Grenoble in France, translated religious passages into DNA code to build unknown proteins which he then injected into his body.

An implant inserted near the pelvis to deliver “on-demand” vibrations is in development by American biohacker Rich Lee. Designed for men, the Lovetron9000 device will be inserted beneath the skin of the pelvis to “enhance the shared experience of lovemaking, emanating a passionate vibration that connects you to your partner,” Lee says. Lee from St. George, Utah, has spent $15,000 developing the toy – although is yet to sell one or use it himself. “We’re the first movers [in the biohacking field],” he told Bloomberg. “But as the technology becomes more mainstream, there will be potential uses for pretty much everybody.” The Lovetron9000’s… This story continues at The Next Web
