09:10 TheNextWeb.comSpaceX launches UberPool-style ridesharing for small satellites

SpaceX just announced a new ridesharing program for small satellites last night that’ll allow companies to get a seat on the Falcon 9 rocket for as little as $2.25 million. This base package will let organizations load a payload of up to 150 kg and launch it into a sun-synchronous orbit (500-600 km from the earth’s surface). The company said these launches will be scheduled and will not wait for a primary payload. This gives a chance to a small company to launch its satellite on time without waiting for a space agency’s mission. It added that these missions won’t… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: SpaceX

The way small satellites and scientific instruments find their way into space these days is generally by hitching a ride on large rockets carrying hefty payloads, wherever they can be squeezed in. But some are looking to change that, with NASA and startup Rocket Lab among them. SpaceX is now looking to muscle into the arena with a new launch program specifically for firing these small payloads into space atop its Falcon 9 rocket.

SpaceX is getting into the rocket rideshare business, giving companies the opportunity to launch bundles of small satellites into orbit on the company’s Falcon 9 rocket. Up until now, SpaceX has mostly focused on launching heavier, bus-sized satellites to space or bulky cargo capsules to the International Space Station. The new program, called theSmallSat Rideshare Program, will offer operators of tiny satellites more flexibility when launching to space.

Typically, small satellites — weighing in at a few hundred pounds — have to hitch rides on big rockets that are already slated to launch much larger cargo to orbit. The satellites can tag along if there’s any leftover room on the rocket and get dropped off in space along the way....
